Volunteers Are The Heart of Alexander JFS

At Alexander Jewish Family Service, volunteers are essential partners in supporting our clients. By generously offering their time, energy, and expertise, they extend a helping hand to our staff, isolated seniors, and others in need within our community. Their contributions truly make a difference.

To uphold the privacy and dignity of those we serve, volunteers working directly with clients are required to:

  • Complete annual HIPAA training
  • Undergo a background screening

These measures ensure a safe and secure environment for our clients and reinforce the trust placed in our services.

Alexander JFS is currently opening volunteer opportunities to our full menu of positions. We have both in-person and virtual ways for you to be involved and help.

We are looking for volunteers to make beautiful Shabbat boxes for hospital patients, friendly visitors who are trained to be weekly friends to seniors, all types of supportive assistants to our wonderful Celebration Company, and members of a cadre of drivers and deliverers who can help with special meals, counseling kits and appointments.

We also love to incorporate your special skills and talents into a volunteer opportunity. The full list of volunteer jobs can be found once you have submitted your volunteer application.  Come join us!

Common Questions about Volunteering

What kind of volunteer activities can a group or family do together?

JFS welcomes group service when we have availability for larger projects.  We look forward to working with you so your group has a meaningful volunteer experience! All groups must be planned in advance and go through our Volunteer Coordinator to follow agency guidelines.  Some of our existing group projects include: organizing food and supply drives for our clients who are the most needy, rolling candles for our Celebration Company Chanukah sale, and holiday gift bags using collected gifts and/or funds based upon client need.

Can my child or grandchild work as a volunteer for school credit?

It is possible for students to get community service credit for volunteering with JFS. Each case is evaluated on an individual basis. JFS does provide community service certificates for students 12-18. Read more about the volunteer opportunities we have for teens here.

Do I need a background check?

Volunteers who work directly with JFS clients will need an updated background check on file. There is a charge for background screenings through our provider, Sterling Volunteers, however, if a volunteer is in need of assistance they should contact the Volunteer Coordinator to see if we have any funds available to assist. If the volunteer has a current background screening within the last year it may be submitted to the Volunteer Coordinator.  A background check is good for five years.

If I volunteered with JFS in the past, can I just start up again?

Thank you for your past service to JFS.  As we have grown and improved our services over the years, we have had to modify our volunteer services program to fit the needs of our clients and the community.  As a HIPAA compliant agency, we have a protocol to follow and hope you understand that in order to maintain our accreditation it must be followed. For example, if your volunteer position is with a client or uses client information, you must take a HIPAA training and quiz annually.

If I have family visiting, can they volunteer with me?

While we welcome our volunteers to share with their family and friends the joy of volunteering, unfortunately they can’t participate without going through our system.

If I have a background screening from another resource or agency, will you take it?

We are happy to review the screening.  If it is 6 months old or less and has all of the information on it that we need, we will be happy to accept it.  However, some agencies only pull local checks and our compliance requires national screening.

Why do you need to keep up with the hours I volunteer?

We keep a record of hours that volunteers gift to us to show the community the dedication that our volunteers have for our clients.  We will provide certificates to students in need of hours for school projects.  If you are a volunteer and haven’t set up a profile or can’t remember where to login, go to our volunteer application.

"Every year our volunteers make over 600 greeting cards that we deliver to seniors isolated in local senior living facilities. These cards bring joy and warmth to all who receive them."
