Alexander Jewish Family Service is a non-profit human service agency located in the Braeswood area of Houston. Founded in 1913, Alexander JFS offers help to all people struggling with challenges on a sliding fee scale. The agency has mental health counseling for individuals and couples, an intensive outpatient program for mental health, disability services, senior adult services, case management, employment help, financial assistance, community outreach, disaster help and volunteer opportunities.

An Alexander JFS case management internship involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at supporting clients and ensuring they have access to necessary resources. Here’s a breakdown of some typical tasks and what they might involve:

  • Community Advocacy: Collecting Resources/Information and Referral Navigation: Interns help identify and gather resources such as community services, financial aid, or educational materials that can aid clients. This might involve researching local support services, contacting organizations, and compiling resource lists.
  • Needs Assessment: Direct Client Service: Working one on one with clients to achieve case management goals, address basic needs, provide short term support and navigation of benefits and supportive service programs. Interns may assist in various other administrative and support tasks, such as maintaining case notes, scheduling appointments, and participating in team meetings to discuss client progress and strategies.
  • Coaching: Financial Literacy and Coaching: Interns assist clients in understanding and managing their finances. This could involve one-on-one coaching sessions where interns explain budgeting, saving, and investing. They might also help clients fill out financial forms or apply for financial assistance.
  • Program Development: Policy: Addressing Social Work Policy: Interns will engage with and contribute to understanding and addressing social work policies that impact client services. This may involve researching current policies, discussions about policy implications and advocating for policy changes as needed.
  • Resource Development: Loans and Scholarship Program: Interns help clients track and meet important deadlines related to scholarships or financial aid. This includes organizing application materials, ensuring all required documents are submitted on time, and providing reminders about upcoming deadlines. Interns can assist with contacting school counselors, providing information tools for students and developing new partnerships to target additional candidates.
  • Resource Development: Disability Advocacy: Supporting clients with disability by helping them navigate and access relevant services and accommodations. This includes understanding disability rights, advocating for necessary adjustments, and ensuring clients receive appropriate support.

Overall, our goal is to support clients in achieving their objectives and accessing the resources they need while gaining hands-on experience in case management.
