Advocacy

"Nothing about us without us."

This isn't just a slogan; it's the core of our advocacy program. Teaching people with disabilities how to advocate for themselves at all levels (in their families, schools, places of employment and within government) empowers them to effectively communicate their own interests, desires, needs and rights.

Common Questions about Advocacy

Do I need to be Jewish?

No, we welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds.

Who can participate?

To participate, you need to be able to come to meetings and participate without a caregiver or parent. You do not need to be a current client of JFS Houston to participate; all are welcome.

The training group is specifically designed for a person with a disability. It is not for the parent or caregiver to attend. The parent or caregiver can attend the information session and assist in communication needed for the self advocate to attend. Following training individuals are invited to join the self-advocacy group of JFS for the year.

Are there any fees?

No, trainings are free.
