Do you remember times when, as a child, you tried to push your body to do something? Perhaps, you tried to run as fast as possible, jump as high as you could or stay awake when you were very tired. Our relationship with our bodies begins at birth, but the understanding and awareness of it changes and develops as we age.
During the toddler and preschool years, children are in a time of exploration and discovery, and they use their imaginations to make the world around them come alive. When encouraged and nurtured, toddlers are learning and testing their autonomy, and discovering who they are as individuals.
Preschoolers learn to interact with each other and use play to develop their leadership and decision-making skills (Mooney, 2013). Taking dance during a child’s early years can contribute positively to their relationship with themselves and the world around them.
