Embracing the Gifts of Individuals with IDD

As we observe Intellectual Disability Awareness Month, I find myself reflecting on the incredible gifts that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) bring to our communities. Their empathy, curiosity and openness inspire me to ask: Am I offering to others what individuals with IDD so naturally give – kindness, connection and authenticity?

One of the most remarkable qualities of individuals with IDD is their genuine love for people. They engage with others wholeheartedly, embracing diverse backgrounds and perspectives in ways that society could learn from. Many have a deep passion for the arts, using creativity as a bridge to connect and share their unique insights. I witnessed this firsthand during my time at Celebration Company, where the participants’ creative spirit and interpersonal warmth enriched my own life in ways I never expected.
